Tourists and local people are confined to their accommodations and places of residence.

Seven to eight feet high storm surges hitting adjoining coastal belts of Cox's bazar have started to cause heavy rainfall, flooding the low-lying areas.

Local public representatives said high storm surges have caused floods in Kutubdia, Golaghata of Maheshkhali, and Matarbari localities surrounding the coastal district.

Tourists and local people are confined to their accommodations and places of residence.

Tourists stranded in the St Martin's island have been kept in safety, said Noor Ahmed, union council chairman of the island.

"Along with the island's local residents, about 1,200 tourists will be housed in the shelters and multi-storey buildings," the chairman said.

He said food and accommodation services for tourists have been ensured under the direction of the district administration and will be taken care of until the storm weakens.

Preparations are underway to assist in the post-disaster measures. A control room has been set up at the deputy commissioner's office.

Information on the cyclone can be obtained by dialing the control room's number: 01715-560688
