Since the maiden report of the coronavirus in Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), a pioneer in the country's healthcare sector, has tested 96,027 samples in its PCR laboratory to date.

According to a media release issued on Saturday, these tests were conducted from 1 April 2020 to 7 January this year.

The institution also launched a specialised fever clinic specifically for the treatment of patients with fever and cough. Between 21 March 2020 and 7 January 2021, about 70,400 patients have received treatments from the clinic.

In addition to the fever clinic, on 4 July last year, BSMMU launched a Corona Center in its cabin block, where 5,478 Covid-19 infected patients received treatment as of January 9, this year.

It is worth mentioning that following the first report on 8 March last year of the Covid-19 pandemic in Bangladesh, the BSMMU, led by its Vice-Chancellor Dr Kanak Kanti Barua took on several initiatives to fight the pandemic.

These measures include setting up the fever clinic, Covid-19 testing lab, Corona Center, Covid-19 follow-up center, and introducing a specialized health-line, helpline, and online services, all of which are still operational.

The BSMMU vice-chancellor is also conducting regular seminars and meetings with the university's frontline fighters, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, to ensure efficient and seamless treatment of Covid-19 patients.

As part of this move, the vice-chancellor attended an orientation event last Thursday, in which he motivated the hospital's frontline fighters to continue their efforts.

Prof Dr Muhammad Rafiqul Alam, pro vice-chancellor of the university, joined the event, among others.
