BRTA mobile courts enforce new law on city roads

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has launched operation of mobile courts to enforce the new road transport law in the capital today.

SM Samirul Islam, Executive magistrate of BRTA, told The Business Standard, "We are checking necessary papers, driving licenses and fitness licenses of the vehicles." 

"Eleven vehicles were sued for not having proper papers and a total of Tk21,000 fines at minimum level were realized from them," he added.

Meanwhile, 20 cases were filed at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital and Tk14,000 was collected as fines, said BRTA Executive Magistrate Masud Hasan Patwari. 

Lesser number of private cars and public transports were seen on the city streets due to the ongoing drive.

Meanwhile, road transport owners and workers associations in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Jashore on Sunday protested the enforcement of Road Transport Act 2018, and demanded amendments in the newly enacted law. 

Earlier, a gazette notification was issued on Sunday after completion of the legal process on operating the mobile courts.

The Road Transport Act, which had been enacted more than a year ago, was supposed to come into effect on November 1.
