State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury MP has urged the local entrepreneurs to be prepared to work with the blue economy.

"The waterways and blue or ocean economy will soon emerge as one of our strongest economic sources. However, most of the investment in the development of the blue economy will have to come from the private sector," the minister said in an online discussion programme marking the "World Rivers Day-2020" at BIWTA (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority) in the capital's Motijheel on Thursday.

"Proper incentives and regulatory policies will be adopted to increase private investment in the sector," he assured.

The minister also called upon all authorities concerned to work together to ensure safe and affordable waterways.

"Waterways will get importance as a good alternative to the road transportation system, if waterways can be made more popular, comfortable and affordable," he further added.
