Basir skips ACC quizzing for second time

Khandaker Enamul Basir, a suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), on Wednesday skipped a second interrogation by the graft watchdog over bribery. 

He bypassed the previous hearing on ‘medical ground’, and shielded by his ‘innocence’, now dismisses the second interrogation. 

He did not even appeal for time. 

With the nonresponse, the ACC is now considering their next step, which ‘is yet to be decided’.     

Basir was supposed to appear before the ACC on Wednesday. Through his lawyer, he instead claimed he did not commit any crime and not willing to appear before the commission.

The commission’s public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya was approached about the issue. 

“We are yet to decide what will be the next step. The commission will decide it as per the rules and regulations,” said Bhattacharya. 

Previously, Basir was summoned to appear before the commission on July 1. But he was absent on that day, and later sought time citing his ‘illness’.

The commission suspended the director on June 10 on charge of information leak to police’s Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman, who faced suspension on June 25. 

Enamul Basir was assigned to look into the corruption allegations brought against the cop.

Mizan then told the media that the ACC official had taken Tk 40 lakh as bribe with a promise to give him a clean chit.

Latter, the ACC formed a three-member-committee headed by its director Fanafillah to look into the matter.

Upon request from the commission, police barred Basir from leaving the country.
