Bangladesh will eradicate poverty by 2030 as per the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) timeframe, said Planning Minister Muhammad Abdul Mannan on Thursday.

“People would suffer from hunger in winter. However, we have reduced seasonal poverty with our combined initiatives,” Mannan said at a seminar titled “Women Empowerment in Achieving SDGs” organized by the ministry.

SDGs are the blueprint set by the United Nations to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

The minister said, “We are preparing ourselves to tackle regional poverty in our next initiative. As per the SDG timeframe, Bangladesh will eradicate poverty by 2030.”

He said private development organisations, the civil society and personal contributors will work together to attain the SDGs.

“The SDGs were determined at an international level but they will be implemented at the grassroots level,” said Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, global vice-president and country director of Hunger Project, in his keynote paper.

He added, “The government has to ensure that all of their services reach every household.”

Badiul also said achieving SDGs will not be possible without people’s contribution and grassroots leadership.
