Bangla Academy president Shamsuzzaman Khan dies of Covid-19

Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan, former director general and president of the Bangla Academy and an eminent folklorist, died of Covid-19 complications on Wednesday at 2 pm.

Shamsuzzaman Khan, 80, was undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the capital for coronavirus and geriatric diseases. He was placed on life support last Sunday as his condition deteriorated.

Faisal Hasan, Senior Information Officer of Ministry of Culture confirmed the matter to media thorugh press release.


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan.

President Md Abdul Hamid has also expressed deep grief over the death.


Earlier on Monday, Habibullah Siraj, director general of Bangla Academy, said Shamsuzzaman Khan's condition was critical. He also said that Shamsuzzaman's wife was also infected with the coronavirus.

Shamsuzzaman Khan gained fame in the international arena through his folk research.

State Minister for Culture KM Khalid has expressed deep grief over his death.
