The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Thursday arrested Khaled Saifullah Ayubi, the central joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, from Singair in Manikganj.

RAB Media Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin confirmed the news.

According to RAB sources, Ayubi was arrested in connection with Hefazat's mayhem last month during a state visit by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Security forces have recently ramped up operations against leaders and activists of Hefazat.

Several senior leaders of the Islamist outfit, including its Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque, Central Assistant General Secretary Khorshed Alam Kashemi, and Khelafat Mazlish Joint Secretary Mufti Shorfat Hossain were arrested in recent days.

These arrests come in the wake of violence during protests led by the group last month. Over a dozen people were killed during the protests.

Police filed at least 77 cases over the incidents of violence with 470 Hefazat activists arrested across the country so far.

Law enforcers are also interrogating several Hefazat leaders in remand.
