AL leader killed in Chattogram over dispute about relief distribution

A local Awami League leader in Chattogram's Hathazari upazila was beaten to death over a dispute about relief distribution.

The incident took place near Sikdar Mosque in Garh Duara Union on Wednesday.

The deceased is Bakhtiyar Sikdar, 48, general secretary of the ward- 7 of Garh Duara Union Awami League, Hathazari upazila.

Advocate Mohammad Ali, president of Hathazari upazila Awami League, told The Business Standard, "Rana Ahmed, Munna and some other youths were criticising the Awami League alleging irregularities in the distribution of relief across the country. Bakhtiyar Sikdar protested against this and they beat him for protesting."

"Union Awami League general secretary Md Enam rescued him from the spot and took him to the local Alif Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead," he said.

Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Masud Alam, said, "Local Awami League leader Bakhtiyar had a disagreement with some people in the area, including Munna and Rana. He was beaten to death on Wednesday afternoon."

"The body has been sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The victim's brother, Lokman Shikdar has filed a case with the Hathazari police station," he added.
