Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked businessmen to prioritise quality in exporting fish and fisheries products.

The premier made the remark while inaugurating national fisheries week 2019 at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in Dhaka on Thursday.

The premier said the government has already built three laboratories in Dhaka, Chattogram and Khulna to ensure high quality export of fisheries.

She also said the government has taken initiatives to train youth in fish production, preservation and marketing.

She said, “fish production has been increased by 58.37 percent in the last ten years. Around 42.77 lakh metric tons of fish have been produced so far, when the target is 45 lakh.”

In 2018, Bangladesh ranked the third-biggest freshwater fish producing country in the world after China and India.

The Prime Minister said that the government plans to make Bangladesh number one in fish production in the world.

Sheikh Hasina said that necessary steps are being taken to start deep-sea fishing in the country’s sea boundary where we have untapped resources.

The premier distributed “National Fisheries Award 2019” among 17 institutions and individuals for contributions to the fisheries sector.

A week-long fisheries fair has started at the KIB premises.

Besides, three-day fisheries fairs will also be arranged at district levels.
