8-year old missing girl found alive after 14 hours

Mamata Bithi, an 8-year old girl who went missing after a boat sank in Jamalpur district on Wednesday evening, has been found alive after 14 hours in another area 60 kilometres away.

A local woman- Parvin Begum found the child in an unconscious state in the Ghughumari char area of Bogura district on Thursday.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Al Amin of Sariakandi police station said: “The child was rescued fourteen hours after the incident and is presently undergoing treatment at the Sariakandi upazila health complex.

“How the child had drifted 60 kilometres away from the place of the accident is yet to be determined.”

On Wednesday, a passenger boat sank in the Jamuna River near Chukaibari union of Dewanganj. The boat -- carrying around 30 passengers -- left for Tinerchar from Futanibazar earlier that day. 

The boat sank near the Tinerchar area due to mighty currents. 

Some of the passengers swam to river banks and locals rescued them. Several others went missing in the accident, including the 8-year old Mamata.

Her parents identified Mamata when they saw her in media reports. They then got in touch with the upazila health complex.
