A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced eight people to life term imprisonment in a case over farmer Ananda Mondol’s murder in Batiaghata upazila in 1999.
The convicts are Promod Mondol, 50, Ashok Mondol, 34, Amar Mondol, 50, Nirmal alias Nimal Mondol, 45, Golok Mondol, 35, Ramesh Mondol, 40, Nishakar Biswas, 38, and Bikash Bala, 50.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each. Five others were acquitted in this case while two others- Ramen Biswas and Dilip Biswas, were out of the judgment process as they died.
According to the prosecution, Ananda was hacked by the offenders from Hoglabunia in Batiaghata upazila around 9:30pm in May 30, 1999, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead on June 2. Victim’s wife Debola Mondol filed a case against 21 people.
After examining the records and 14 witnesses, Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal of Khulna Judge Md Saifuzzaman Hero handed down the verdict in the afternoon.
