8 fishermen jailed for catching Hilsa in Manikganj

The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsa from October 9 to 31 to ensure safe spawning of the fish

A mobile court on Friday night jailed eight fishermen for catching Hilsa from the Jamuna River defying a government ban at Alekdia Char area in Shibaloy upazila.

Shibaloy upazila assistant commissioner (Land) Md Jakir Hossain sentenced the fishermen to one year jail each during a drive in the Jamuna River.

The fishermen are –Ayub Sheikh, Fazlul Haque, Noor-e-Alam, Hamid Ali, Mirazul Sheikh, Alamgir Hossain, Lokman Sheikh, and Habu Mia.

Around 2,000 meters of current net was burnt during the drive.
