Six activists of the reform group of Parbatya Chattogram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) were killed and three others injured after unidentified assailants indiscriminately shot them entering a house yard in Bandarban Sadar upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Ratan SenTanchangya (60), Bimal Kanti Chakma alias Prajit Chakma (65), David Marma (50), Joy Tripura (40), Jiten Tripura (42) and Milon Chakma (60).
"Some unknown people with arms entered the house in the morning and opened fire indiscriminately, killing six members of the PCJSS (reform) on the spot," said Bandarban Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam Chowdhury.
"The incident will be investigated and those who were involved will be identified," said the OC.
Among the deceased, Ratan Sen Tanchangya and Bimal Kanti Chakma were the Bandarban District Committee President of the PCJSS (reform) and Bimal kanti Chakma was the vice-president of the party's central committee.
Bidyut Chakma (37), Niru Chakma (50) and Hlawangching Marma (22) have been injured during the shooting.
Ubamang Marma, general secretary of the district committee of the PCJSS (reform), said he was also present at the scene.
"Suddenly I heard gunshots. I fell on the ground and survived," he said.
He blamed the main party of the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) for the attack.
An eyewitness Waimong Marma said, "Nine members of the reform group were present at the house. Between 6:30 am to 7 am, two men covering their face suddenly entered the yard of the house, fired randomly and ran away."
Minipri Marma, wife of the deceased Ratan Sen Tanchangya, said, "Hearing the sound of gunfire, I came out of the house and saw some people including my husband lying in the yard with gunshot wounds."
However, when contacted for comments, the mobile phones of the district leaders and activists of the PCJSS were found switched off.
The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital.
