More than two crore people sought police help by dialling the national emergency number in this period

Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary said they served around 58 lakh people through "999" (national emergency helpline) in the last two years after its launch.

During this time, more than two crore people dialled the number for police help, he also said.

"Among them, 40 percent were women and we could provide services to 58 lakh people," the police chief on Friday said this at a programme of the Dhaka North City Corporation in Gulshan of the capital.

He also mentioned that they are trying to ensure a people-friendly police department.

"We are doing our best to secure the entire nation and society and to create a place especially for women where they would be safe," Patwary further said.

Regarding equality for women, he said the number of female police members, in proportion to that of male ones, is increasing day by day in the country.

Apart from serving the traffic division, female police personnel are also working with reputation in the special force abroad. One hundred and fifty female police members have been deployed in the Congo UN peacekeeping mission, Patwary concluded.

On December 12, 2017, Bangladesh launched the toll-free national emergency helpline "999."

Through the emergency dial, three kinds of emergency services are provided to the seekers. Those include crime and accident, fire and ambulance.

One can seek services round the clock and the services can be availed even at zero-balance.
