4 female Bangladeshi judges to participate in UN peacekeeping mission 

For the first time, four female Bangladeshi judges are going to take part in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions. Three of them will join the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and one of them will join the UN peacekeeping mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Among the four judges, Munshiganj Joint District and Sessions Judge Afsana Abedin and Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Nawrin Mahbuba will leave Dhaka for South Sudan on 8 March.

On this occasion, the Secretary of Law and Justice Department Golam Sarwar bade them farewell on Sunday. Ministry officials, including the joint secretary of the department Bikash Kumar Saha, were present at the time.

Cox's Bazar District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge (District Judge) Jebunnahar Ayesha will leave Dhaka on 19 March for South Sudan and Jamalpur Joint District and Sessions Judge Lubna Jahan will leave for Somalia on 15 March. 

There, they will work on restructuring and developing judiciary systems as justice advisors on a one-year deputation to the Rule of Law Advisory Branch. 

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq said the participation of female judges in the international arena and UN peacekeeping missions is undoubtedly a milestone for Bangladesh's judicial system. 

He hopes that the female judges of Bangladesh will bring renown to Bangladesh with their qualifications and skills in the protection of world peace and human rights. 

Md Golam Sarwar, secretary of the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, said "8 March is World Women's Day. On this day, the participation of two women judges in the UN peacekeeping mission is a huge achievement for the judiciary sector of Bangladesh."

He hopes that the participation of female Bangladeshi judges in the UN peacekeeping mission will further strengthen world peacekeeping activities.

Earlier, on 24 February and 1 March, the four judges were attached to the Law and Justice Department in three separate circulars in consultation with the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
