Four people including a couple were killed as a fire broke out following a gas cylinder explosion in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district early Monday.

The deceased were identified as Milon Miah, 37, son of Samsul Huda, his wife Munni Begum, 30, and their two neighbours Farhad Hossain, 38 and Abdul Awal,40, hailing from Gobindaganj and Palashbari upazilas in Gaibandha district.

Kabirul Alam, station officer of Kaliakoir Fire Service, said that the fire broke out around 5:45am following explosion of the gas cylinder when a stove was ignited for cooking.

On informattion, two firefightning units rushed to the spot around 7am and doused the fire after half an hour frantic effort.

Later, they recovered four charred bodies from the spot.

The fire also gutted at least 45 houses.

According to victim's family members, when a garment worker Nasima ignited gas stove early in the morning, the gas cylinder exploded and the fire broke out from the explosion.

However, Nasima escaped as she ran out quickly from the kitchen.

Jahirul Islam, additional superintendent of district police said that the bodies will be handed over to family members.

The district administration has distributed tk 20,000 to each victim family.
