Three youths were stabbed and looted of Tk1.6 lakh at Shaibal point of Cox's Bazar beach on Sunday night.

The injured are Chattogram University student Naim Sheikh, 25, Garment Businessman of Dhaka Salahuddin Razzak, 31, and Mosharraf Hossain Joni, 32.

Masum Khan, operation officer of Cox's Bazar Model Police Station, said the trio were undergoing treatment at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital now. The condition of Naim was critical, he said.

The youths, who claimed themselves tourists, were strolling along the beach in the area after dinner. Suddenly a group of seven to eight people surrounded them at around 11:15 pm, said Mosharraf.

They snatched them of their money and three mobile phones. When the victims tried to resist them and shouted for help, the miscreants stabbed them with knife and fled the scene.

Sarwar Hossain, a lifeguard of the beach, said around 11.30 pm he and Khorshed Alam, supervisor of the beach workers, saw two men carrying another man in their arms were coming towards them and asking for help. They found them bleeding. Then Sarwar and Khorshed called tourist police, who took the injured to the hospital. "We informed the executive magistrate of the district administration's tourism cell after arriving at the hospital," said Sarwar.

However, police were sent to the spot and drive was going on to arrest the attackers, said Masum.

"Though the youths are claiming that they went there to roam around, why they went there with that amount of money is not clear. They will be asked about it as soon as they get better," he added.
