4 die as train rams into autorickshaw in Cumilla

Four people, including an autorickshaw driver, were killed as a train rammed into the CNG-run autorickshaw in Cumilla.

The accident took place on Tuesday (6 December) at the Dakshin Khila Tuguria rail crossing area of the Noakhali-Laksam railway line.

The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw passenger Maksudur Rahman, 65, from North Howla village of Manoharganj; Mohammad Habib, 22, from the same village; Moiful Begum, 35, from Bharanikhand village of Khila union in the same upazila; and auto-rickshaw driver Shahidul Islam, 40, of Uttor Howla village.

Confirming the accident, Laxam Railway police station Sub-Inspector Abdul Alim said that initially, "We came to know that the Laxam-bound Noakhali Express train collided with the auto-rickshaw around 9:30am. Three passengers were killed on the spot.

"The driver was taken to a private hospital in Laksam where he succumbed to death around 11:30am. We received information about another passenger being critically injured, but his identity could not be ascertained yet."

He also said that, "Initially we came to know that the CNG auto rickshaw was going from Munshirhat Bazar in Uttar Howla Union of Manoharganj to Khila Bazar. 

The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their relatives, he added. The CNG-run autorickshaw, which was crumpled by the impact, was removed from the track and train movement was normalised.
