Three policemen were suspended on Wednesday night for transporting mother Hilsa illegally, defying a government ban.
District police chief Abdul Momen took the punitive action against Sub-Inspector Montu Mia of Motor Vehicle Department of Shariatpur Police Lines, and constables Hridoy and Sanjit.
The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting Hilsa from October 9 to 31 to ensure their safe spawning.
Momen said locals caught the policemen red-handed while transporting the mother Hilsa around 11:30pm.
Later, Mahabubur Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Sadar upazila, distributed the seized fish among orphanages.
