3 burned dead in Kutupalong fire
Three people were burned to death and several others were injured in a fire at Kutupalong Bazaar near the Ukhiya Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar early Friday.
The deceased are as Ansarullah, 20, Faridul Islam, 25, and Muhammad Ayash, 22, of Block-10 (G) of Kutupalong Camp-10. All three were shop employees and Rohingya nationals.
Engineer Helal Uddin, a member of Rajapalang Union Parishad (UP) Ward 9 Kutupalong area who is also the president of the market committee confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Seven shops in the market completely burnt down and another 25-30 shops were damaged. The fire is estimated to have caused a loss of around Tk 2 crore.
Cox's Bazar District Superintendent of Police Hasanuzzaman visited the spot after receiving information about the incident.
The deceased still remain unidentified. They were sleeping inside the shops.
Imdadul Haque, an officer at Ukhia Fire Service and Civil Defense Station, said a fire broke out at Kutupalong Bazar in Rajapalang Union at around 2.30 am.
After 3 hours of efforts, two units of the fire service were able to bring the fire under control at around 5:15 am.
The injured were rescued and admitted to various local hospitals and Ukhia Upazila Health Complex.
Imdadul said the cause of the fire had not yet been confirmed.
