21 August grenade attack convict arrested in Dhaka
At least 24 people, including Awami League women affairs secretary and late President Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, were killed
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) team today arrested Iqbal Hossain, who was sentenced to life imprisonment over the 21 August grenade attack, from the capital's Diabari area last night.
RAB Director Ashique Billa (Media) confirmed the matter to The Business Standard on Tuesday morning.
On this day in 2004, a grenade attack was carried out on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue when the BNP-Jamaat alliance was in office. Sheikh Hasina, the then leader of the opposition, was apparently the target.
At least 24 people, including Awami League women affairs secretary and late President Zillur Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman, were killed. Three hundred others were also injured. Sheikh Hasina escaped the attack unhurt but her hearing was affected badly.
A Dhaka court on 10 October, 2018, sentenced 19 people to death including former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and life imprisonment to another 19 including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on the August 21, 2004 grenade attack charge.
