200 more shops demolished at Fulbaria Supermarket on 2nd day’s drive

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) did not face any issues as they resumed their eviction of illegal shops for the second consecutive day on Wednesday at Fulbaria Supermarket-2 in the capital.

During the drive, 200 more illegal shops from two four-storied buildings of the market were demolished, the DSCC officials said.

The DSCC team, led by three executive magistrates, resumed the eviction drive in the market around 12 noon and continued for six hours. 

DSCC sources said that among the demolished shops, 140 were located at the back of the market and 40 others were inside the market itself. Additionally, all shops built in the parking space were also evicted.

Shahin Fakir, officer in charge of Bangshal Police Station told The Business Standard that the market area had a sizeable police presence in light of protests during the first day's drive.

However, DSCC did not face any issues today, he added.  

Visiting the spot, this correspondent witnessed the shop owners evacuating merchandise from their shops.

DSCC started an eviction drive on Tuesday to demolish 911 illegal shops at Fulbaria Supermarket-2. 250 shops had been evicted on the first day amid protests by shop owners and employees.

DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh decided to launch the eviction drive after a committee report identified the existence of 911 shops in the Phulbaria Supermarket-2 that were in violation of official design specifications.
