20 hurt in Brahmanbaria clash in presence of law minister

The clashes sparked on the occasion of Law Minister Anisul Haque's arrival

At least 20 people were injured in a clash between supporters of two mayoral candidates in the presence of law minister Anisul Haque in Brahmanbaria's Kasba Upazila on Friday.

The clashes have been going on intermittently in front of Kasba Upazila Parishad premises since 11 am.

However, as of now, the injured remain unidentified.

According to locals, Kasba Municipality Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel and Kasba Upazila Juba League President MA Aziz's supporters gathered in front of the Upazila Parishad on the occasion of the arrival of Law Minister Anisul Haque on Friday morning.

Both Jewel and Aziz are hoping for Awami League's nomination in the upcoming Kasba municipality elections.

At one point, their supporters engaged in a clash for an unknown reason but it was stopped after a while. Later around 11:30 pm, the law minister came to the Upazila Parishad to attend the pre-arranged function.

Jewel-Aziz supporters clashed again during the ceremony and it continued intermittently as of writing this report. 

Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain confirming said, "The situation is not yet normal. The clashes are going on intermittently."
