Two children died and 10 others were injured in a landslide in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early today.

The two were identified as Afia, 5, daughter of Md Alam of Teknaf's Old Pallan Para, and Mehedi Hasan, 10, son of Rabiul Hasan of the same area.

"The landslide was caused by heavy rains early in the morning," said Abdul Matin, disaster preparedness programme officer of Teknaf.

Alam and Rabiul live in foothill. There was a hill over their houses and the landslide occurred when it crumbled due to incessant rains falling intermittently since Monday night.

Afia and Mehedi died on the scene while the injured were taken to hospital.

Doctors at Teknaf Upazila Hospital said some of the injured were sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital as their condition was critical.

Matin said Disaster Preparedness Programme volunteers of Teknaf carried out a rescue operation and firefighters later joined them.

Pradip Kumad Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said a police team was sent to the scene.

"Details will be disclosed later," he added.
