2 staff of a tobacco company jailed for violating social distancing rules
They were marketing cigarettes gathering more than 200 retailers
A mobile court in Barishal sentenced two supervisors of British-American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh one month of imprisonment on Thursday after they did not maintain the social distancing rules set to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The two supervisors – Md Nayon, 36 and Md Maruf Hossain, 29 – were marketing cigarettes amassing more than 200 retailers in Police Line Road in Barishal on Thursday.
A mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md Ziaur Rahman, in collaboration with Kotwali Model Police Station, raided the office of Mesarse J Ahmed & Company, Barishal Branch, BAT Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon.
Ziaur Rahman said the two had called more than 200 shopkeepers to the company office over the phone amid a concerning situation prevailing in the country over the novel coronavirus.
Retailers present there said some sales representatives had asked them to come.
