Sixteen Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders have been suspended in Cumilla for putting up Facebook statuses mourning the death of war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.

The matter was disclosed on Sunday (3 September) night in a press release signed by Cumilla North District Chhatra League President Md Mohiuddin and General Secretary Saiful Islam Rubel.

Saiful Islam Rubel told TBS that this action has been taken against 16 people for posting a status on Facebook expressing grief over the death of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity. "We have taken this step following the central committee's decision. There was delay in taking this action as we were busy with the programmes of August (month of  mourning). We are still monitoring. If anyone at Chhatra League is seen giving status mourning the death of a Razakar, action will be taken against them.  Those who have sympathy for Razakars are enemies of the country."

Sayeedi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, died while undergoing treatment on 14 August. Till now many members of Awami League and its affiliated organisations have been suspended over mourning Sayeedi's death publically.
