15 injured, 1 arrested in rally of freedom fighters’ children in Chattogram

At least 15 people, including journalists have been injured in a clash with the followers of Banshkhali constituency MP Mostafizur Rahman during a rally in Chattogram to protest not giving state honors to freedom fighter Dr Ashraf Ali during his burial.

The incident took place in front of Chattogram Press Club on Monday morning where five freedom fighters were injured. Police arrested one person from the spot.

According to a victim, former Central Chhatra League member Abu Sadat Sayem, "The followers of Banshkhali MP Mostafizur Rahman attacked us during the rally with sticks and weapons."

"Three people have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital while others received treatment locally.  We are preparing a case over this incident," he added.

Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohsin said, "A man named Enam was arrested in connection with the incident. So far no one has lodged a complaint with the police.

"Banshkhali MP Mostafizur Rahman did not receive any calls after attempts were made to contact him," he added.

No official of the upazila administration was present to inform the guard of honor before burying freedom fighter Dr Ashraf Ali of Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong on July 26.

After the burial, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer placed floral wreaths on his grave. Later, various programs including press conference were held in this matter.
