বিএনপির চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করেছেন দলটির ভারপ্রাপ্ত চেয়ারম্যান তারেক রহমান। ৯ জানুয়ারি রাতে দলের স্থায়ী কমিটির জরুরি বৈঠকে এই সিদ্ধান্ত হয়।
