The country's second-largest mobile network operator Robi has set up a modern innovation lab at The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB).

State Minister for Information and Communications Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak inaugurated the lab as the chief guest Sunday at an online event, which was also attended by Robi's Managing Director and CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed was also present.

Event attendees were informed that the innovation lab had been set up to introduce ICMAB students to data analytics, blockchain and internet of things (IoT). The lab will play a crucial role in innovation, aiming to solve business problems.

ICMAB will count as credit hours the time spent by students in the lab for learning, project, or research. Students will also obtain a professional certificate upon completion of the lab assignments.

Zunaid Ahmed Palak said Bangladesh has changed from an intensive labour-dependent economy to a technology-based one in just 12 years.

"For a country to have a developed economy, research and innovation are critical. To that end, the Robi-ICMAB Innovation Lab is an excellent initiative," he said.

The state minister said the ICT Department would provide all manner of support to the lab in the days ahead.

Robi CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said innovative digital technologies riding on the Fourth Industrial Revolution had opened the door to great possibilities.

"What we need now is skilled human resources who can take advantage of these opportunities. We are proud to undertake such an initiative with ICMAB. I would like to thank the ICMAB authorities for allowing us to set up this lab for the country's foremost accountants," he noted.

Robi's Chief Information Officer Asif Naimur Rashid, Chief Human Resources Officer Faisal Imtiaz Khan, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer Shahed Alam, ICMAB President Md Jasim Uddin Akand, South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) President AKM Delwar Hossain, ICMAB ICT Committee Chairman Faruk Sikder and senior officials of Robi and ICMAB were present on the occasion.
