When Shakib Al Hasan left the field with an hour left to play on the second day of the first Test against West Indies, many thought that it was a recurrence of the groin injury he had suffered days before in the third ODI.

A decision would have been made on his availability for the third day's play in the Chattogram Test after a scan on Friday morning.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have now confirmed via a press release that Shakib has not injured his groin, but rather has a strain on his left thigh.

"Having recovered from his previous groin injury ahead of the first Test and successfully managing to bat in the Bangladesh first innings as well as send down six overs, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has suffered a strain in a different region of his left thigh while fielding on day two," senior manager of media and communications in the BCB, Rabeed Imam wrote in the statement.

"The injury was confirmed by an MRI scan this morning. The BCB medical team will continue to treat and review his progress over the course of the first Test," Imam further added in the statement.

It puts into doubt whether Shakib will be able to play in the Test again.
