The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will appoint a new ODI captain within 12 August, said its cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus. The announcement came five days after Tamim Iqbal had given up Test captaincy and ruled himself out of the upcoming Asia Cup.

After an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors on Thursday, Yunus implied that the player who will lead the team in the Asia Cup is not necessarily going to be the full-time captain.

Jalal Yunus said the directors have given the board president Nazmul Hassan the responsibility of selecting the captain for the multinational tournament starting on  30 August.

"We called an emergency meeting to decide who is going to lead the team in the Asia Cup," said Yunus. "We have given the board president the responsibility of selecting the captain [for the Asia Cup]. He will speak to the probable candidates and finalise a captain by the 12th."

Shakib is the "obvious choice" for the role, said Nazmul Hassan earlier. Litton Das is currently the designated vice-captain. Mehidy Hasan Miraz has also emerged as a contender, according to Yunus.

"Since we have to announce the team [for the Asia Cup] by 12 August, we will decide a captain for it first. We must announce the team as well. The cut-off time for the World Cup is 5 September. So we will announce the captain [for the World Cup] after thinking about it."
