Bangladesh off the mark in World Test Championship only to remain at the bottom of the table
This is the first drawn Test match in seven years in Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh are off the mark in the World Test Championship as the first Test between them and hosts Sri Lanka at Pallekele ended in a high-scoring draw.
This is the first drawn Test match in seven years in Sri Lanka.
None of Dimuth Karunaratne and Dhananjaya de Silva could reach further milestones as a rejuvenated Taskin Ahmed sent them back to the pavilion, ending a long drought.
Karunaratne got out for 244 while de Silva made 166. But breezy knocks from Niroshan Dickwella (31 off 33) and Wanindu Hasaranga (43 off 55) ensured that Sri Lanka got really quick runs towards the end. They added 136 runs in the first session on day five and declared on 648 for eight. They batted 179 overs, six overs more than the visitors batted.
Taskin Ahmed bowled with a lot of heart. He bowled more overs than any other Bangladeshi fast bowler in the match and got three wickets. Spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam had to bowl a lot of overs too, 58 and 45 overs respectively to be exact.
Bangladesh openers Saif Hassan and Tamim Iqbal came out to bat in the second session. They were 107 runs behind.
Sri Lanka had a genuine chance to win the match if they could bowl Bangladesh out cheaply. Suranga Lakmal got rid of Saif Hassan quickly. The right-hander had a forgettable Test match as he made 0 & 1 in two innings.
Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed for a nought, becoming the fifth Bangladeshi batter to score a hundred and a duck in the same match.
But it was Tamim Iqbal who took the attack on like the first innings and unsettled the Lankan bowlers.
He was particularly aggressive against off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva. Tamim didn't miss out on boundary opportunities and raced to fifty in no time. When Tamim reached fifty, Bangladesh were 52 for two. This is the lowest team total ever in Tests when a batter got to fifty.
Mominul Haque was struggling to score but Tamim continued to play his shots. Bangladesh reached 100 for two at tea.
Tamim was unbeaten on 74 off 98 and Mominul on 23.
The play was called off as it was pelting down during the third session. The Test match saw 75.82 runs per wicket which is the highest in seven years in Sri Lanka.
Dimuth Karunaratne was adjudged the Player of the match:
"The first few overs I was struggling, but I thought if I get a start and hang around, I can get a big one. The bowlers tried their heart out, but Bangladesh batted very well, showed good patience, and when we batted as well, nothing much for the bowlers, pretty much a batting paradise. We need a 50-50 wicket [for the second Test], we need something for the bowlers as well."
Mominul Haque, the Bangladesh captain was happy with the performance: "I think it was a team performance, everyone contributed, especially Shanto. We were set up really well by Tamim Iqbal, and later on Liton and Mushy did really well. The bowlers tried really hard, especially Taskin, Miraz and Taijul. It depends on your mentality [dealing with bubbles]. When you represent your country, you have to adjust, it's totally a mental thing. I'm happy as a captain to contribute for the team [when asked about his first away hundred]."
Brief scores:
Bangladesh 541/7d & 100/2 (33 overs)
