There are many ways to help people in need. A man in Tahirpur upazila has come up with a noble initiative to stand by the poor people of his locality in this time of coronavirus crisis.

Abul Bashar, a bakery shop owner, on Saturday sold around 500 kg vegetables at Tk 1 per kg among the poor of Kamrabanda village.

The vegetables, including tomato, brinjal, pumpkin, green chilli, basil and snake gourd, were given to 200 families at the token price in the morning.

Besides, he has started distributing rice, lentil, oil, flour, onion, soap and masks for free among those in dire need during the coronavirus outbreak.

Visiting Badaghat Bazar on Badampatti road in the upazila on Saturday morning, the UNB correspondent found Bashar selling vegetables in front of his own food shop -- Emon Bakery.

Talking to UNB, the trader termed his initiative 'food aid for poor and distressed families during disaster'. "I bought vegetables worth Tk 4,500 and sold those for Tk 490," he said, adding that he earlier provided food assistance worth Tk 21,000 among 50 families at his own village.

Bangladesh is no under virtual lockdown as COVID-19 keeps spreading fast, disrupting the normal life. The country has so far reported 84 deaths and 2,144 cases of coronavirus.
