Onion price hits Tk240 in Chuadanga
Vendors in Chuadanga are selling per kilogram of fresh local onions at Tk220-240 and slightly rotten ones at Tk140-160
The traders of Chuadanga are selling per kilogram of fresh local onions for Tk220-240 and slightly rotten ones for Tk140-160, while the price of one maund of paddy is Tk480-540.
The correspondent visited a number of markets across the district on Friday to confirm the matter.
A farmer from Vandardaha village, Hashem Ali said, "If all of our money is spent on buying onions, then how would we buy vegetables and other food items?"
The price of onion has suddenly increased by Tk60 per kg. Some of the customers are leaving the shops without buying onion after hearing the price, while some are buying onions in small quantity.
Joynal Mandal from Kutubpur village said, "The price is increasing every day. Government should take steps to control the price. It will be difficult for us to buy onions otherwise."
Meanwhile, onion vendor Kamal Hossain said, "We are buying one maund of onion at Tk7500. After adjusting transportation costs, this is the price we need to sell the onions for."
Senior Vice President of Chuadanga Chamber of Commerce Sharin Malik said that imported onions are not available in Chuadanga and all of the onions being sold in the markets are local.
"The price will be back to normal within a few days," he added.
