Wouldn't it be great if you could spend a day without worrying whether your dog ate his or her lunch – without your assistance – while you were busy in a meeting? Would not life become easier if your cat could be trained not to scratch your furniture or shoes?
Sanjida, mother of two lovely cats named Mickey and Lily, could not find a reliable pet service provider in Dhaka when she returned from Spain. "I suffered a lot due to a lack of verified vets and expert service providers in the city. Also, there were very few options regarding dedicated e-commerce platforms selling pet food products," says Sanjida.
Mickey and Lily fell sick during a festival and Sanjida tried to reach many vets but did not receive a response. During public holidays, veterinary services are hard to find in Dhaka. "We needed trusted service providers," says Sanjida.
Sometimes expired food was delivered to them, unregistered vets handled their pets, and occasionally, her pet were prescribed the wrong medication.
This situation inspired the idea of Poshapets. Sanjida Farhana Oishe, founder of Poshapets says, "To be very honest, my Mickey gave me the idea." Poshapets is an online platform that can fulfil all your pet's needs – starting with food to getting a haircut – you name it, it has it.
"The affluent class has been rising at a rate of 10.5% since 2014, driving the rise of the pet industry as well. Such a platform is needed in Bangladesh. We figured out the secret sauce in the industry and bootstrapped our idea to make it a reality," added Sanjida.
Poshapets was launched in June 2019 – 10 days prior to Eid-ul-Fitr. With the public holiday in mind, they launched their pet hotel service and the customer response was 88 percent in the first month of operation.
In June, 255 pets availed the pet hotel service and the pet owners' word-of-mouth worked its magic on other pet owners. "Pet parents want trusted service providers and good quality food for their beloved pets. We make sure that all pets return home safe and sound," said Sanjida.
Even though the pet industry is growing, certain issues exist which work as a barrier to Poshapets and similar platforms. "A lot of vets do not want to stay in the profession, they prefer switching because of social stigma. Also, pet food tax is 62 percent, which automatically makes it expensive. Many pet parents cannot afford to buy good pet food and I see how they struggle psychologically because this," says Sanjida.
Pohsapets aims to make the lives of pets and owners easier. The platform's founders want to expand their platform globally. A satisfied customer base within a time-span of six months has turned the tables for Poshapets. This platform took part in the Startup World Cup 2020 and was one of the eight companies selected for the finale from Bangladesh.
