They say that everything is bigger in Texas.
Woodhouse Grill, located beside Canadian International University in Banani 11, tries to bring the big taste of Texan grilled ribs and steaks to Dhaka and does so in many cases with aplomb.
Upon entering, the place gives you the vibe and feel of a bar or a tavern with the dim lights and the use of wood on the floor and the walls and in many ways staying true to its name - Woodhouse Grill.
Now, let’s talk about the food.
While there are steaks and the Tomahawk is a crowd favourite, the Broncho ribs challenge is the most interesting one they have.
It’s basically two 800 gram Broncho ribs that have been cooked for over eight hours to make it as soft and succulent as possible.
There is a surprisingly sweet coleslaw, a very spicy side of rice, some sauteed veggies and a very heavy poutine with a lot of cheese and potato wedges instead of fries.
Now, the challenge is for one person to finish the whole thing within 25 minutes and the whole thing will be free.
But if you can’t, and you want to enjoy the whole thing with a friend, then it will cost you taka 3,690 plus VAT and service charge.
If you like barbecue then the ribs are a must-have, especially because of the softness and the brilliant flavours that it has.
The sauces are not overwhelming and blend in beautifully with the ribs and for 2-3 people this offer is perfectly worth it.
The only downside to such ribs is you actually should try to finish them quickly because when they cool down, the meat becomes a bit more harder and chewy.
The fat inside the meat condenses and almost acts as an adhesive so that is something to be wary of.
Moving on to the service, and this is something that is top-notch.
From being very helpful and informative to what could order and what is made in which way to just the general friendliness, it’s a rarity to find in the service sector of this country.
Another specialty of the Broncho ribs challenge is how the person serving the platter will be ringing a cowbell on his way to the table to ensure everyone turns their head and looks at what’s being served.
One also has to sign a paper with terms and conditions to ensure that they are fit enough to take the challenge.
It is really a smart decision from the owners to ensure no unsavoury incidents occur after the challenge, and even if it does, it wouldn’t be their fault.
So far, around 80 people have tried the Broncho ribs challenge, over ten have successfully managed to finish it.
The food can be finished within 25 minutes, but whether one can eat all that food is the main challenge, especially the sides, which is over half the dish.
So finally, it has to be said that the place, the ambiance, the service and of course the food makes Woodhouse Grill a fantastic culinary experience.
There is an amount of class and sophistication to this very bold and in-your-face food and the combination really is something worth experience.
And as far as the price goes, The Pit Grill, located in Dhanmondi is more expensive but their steaks are the best in town.
However, they don’t have an offer as interesting as the Brocho ribs challenge.
If good grill, steaks, and ribs are what you want in Banani and without spending as much as The Pit Grill, Woodhouse Grill is the place to be.
