Super cyclone Amphan may hit tomorrow morning, danger signals to rise
Though danger signal number 7 for maritime ports of Mongla and Payra, and danger signal number 6 for Chittagong and Cox's Bazar are still advised, however, the meteorological office said that the new danger signal could come soon
The super cyclone Amphan might hit Bangladesh coast on Wednesday morning with a 5-10 metres high tidal wave, said Monowar Hossain, meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The cyclone might make landfall from morning to evening on Khulna before heading for Chattogram, the meteorologist added.
Though danger signal number 7 for maritime ports of Mongla and Payra, and danger signal number 6 for Chittagong and Cox's Bazar are still advised, however, the meteorological office said that the new danger signal could come soon.
Currently, the super cyclone over West Central Bay and adjoining area moved north- northeastwards and was centred about 845km southwest of Chattogram port, 795 km southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 730km south-southwest of Mongla port and 725km south-southwest of Payra port as of 9am today.
Coastal district administrations said that they had taken all-out preparations to minimize the possible damage from the cyclone. This year's preparations include extra measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Apart from cyclone shelters, educational institutions have been opened so that gatherings which pose Covid-19 infection risk can be averted during the natural calamity.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said the authorities had already prepared 12,078 shelters — double the number prepared during cyclone Bulbul last year.
The government will begin shifting the coastal people to the centers on Tuesday.
