Awareness campaign over cyclone ‘Yaas’ started in Satkhira
The local administration has started an awareness campaign in the coastal areas of Satkhira to deal with cyclone "Yaas".
ANM Abuzer Gifari, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Shyamnagar in the district, said awareness campaign has been launched in 12 unions of the upazila at a time. The campaign started on 5pm on Sunday.
The UNO said almost all natural calamities that hit Bangladesh hit Shyamnagar upazila because of its geographical position at the end of the coastal region of the country.
A meeting was held with all union parishad chairmen of the upazila to deal with the cyclone. They have been directed to take all kinds of preparation to combat the storm.
Abuzer Gifari further said that there are 103 cyclone shelters in the upazila. People are being cautioned against the cyclone.
The administration will have all out preparations so that not a single person loses his/her life in the storm.
It is yet to be decided as to how many people will be taken to the shelter centres, he added.
Meanwhile, rains, thundershowers and storms swept over various parts of Satkhira. Two people died -- one in lightning and another one died being electrocuted as an electric cable severed in the storm.
However, the meteorological department did not attribut the storm to the effect of cyclone "Yaas".
