Bangladesh has offered the West African country of Guinea Bissau, quality goods from Bangladesh at affordable prices.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Portugal, Tarik Ahsan, termed trade between the two countries as not being up to its full potential, according to a Tuesday press release.

In an audience with President Embalo, the Ambassador also suggested that Guinea Bissau consider accrediting at least a non-resident ambassador to Bangladesh to maintain regular bilateral contact.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Portugal, Tarik Ahsan, also presented his credentials to the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo, in the capital city Bissau on Tuesday, as the non-resident Ambassador to that country with residence in Lisbon and raised these issues.

Ambassador Ahsan also suggested that both countries can cooperate and exchange best practices, particularly in rural development and agriculture. He further urged Guinea Bissau to work with Bangladesh at multilateral fora on the common issue of climate change.

President Embalo expressed keen interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh, particularly in the proposed areas of trade and capacity building and suggested that the two Foreign Ministries remain in contact for promoting the cooperation.

He expressed his willingness to accredit a non-resident Ambassador of Guinea Bissau to Bangladesh.

Ambassador Ahsan also requested continued support of Guinea Bissau in the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to ensuring the repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas back to Myanmar from Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Ambassador Tarik Ahsan noted that Bangladesh and Guinea Bissau have similar historical backgrounds of achieving independence through glorious wars of liberation. He drew attention to the fact that the flags of both the countries were raised at the United Nations Secretariat in New York on the same day on 18 September 1974.

The Ambassador said he was privileged to be the first Bangladesh Ambassador to present credentials to the Head of State of Guinea Bissau. Ambassador Tarik Ahsan also conveyed the greetings of Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to President Embalo at the time.

Congratulating the Ambassador and extending warm greetings to the Bangladesh President, Prime Minister, and the people of Bangladesh, President Embalo hoped that bonds of friendship between the two countries would be further strengthened in the days to come.
