Sammilita Parishad, a panel of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) registered members announced its panel leader name for the trade body's next election in 2021.
Giant Group Managing Director Faruque Hassan will lead the panel in next election. Faruque Hassan is a former vice president of the apparel trade body, according to a press release.
Faruque Hassan is also former president of the Dutch-Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Currently, he serves as honorary consul general of Greece in Bangladesh, the press release said.
The BGMEA's next election is scheduled to be held at the end of March or early April, according to apparel sector leaders.
Apparel sector entrepreneurs traditionally compete to elect its leadership for every two years under the banner of Sammilita Parishad and Forum, another panel of BGMEA registered members.
However, both panel jointly formed a panel "Sammilita Forum" after the election in 2013. And the election was not held in 2015 as both Sammilita Parishad and Forum panels jointly decided to elect the board.
Later on September 22, 2015, Md Siddiqur Rahman was elected BGMEA president from Sammilita Parishad and served as head of the apparel apex trade body for three years and seven months after getting extension three times from the government.
There was a consensus between the two panels to reverse leaderships for two terms.
But in 2018, another new panel was formed named "Swadhinata Parishad" aiming to bring Sammilita Forum to the elections.
As per earlier commitment "Sammilita Forum" chosen Rubana Huq, managing director of Mohammadi Group as their panel leader.
In April 2019, Rubana Huq was elected president from Forum to lead the association for the 2019-2021 terms.
BGMEA, having around 4500 members, is being run by a 35-member board of directors, including seven vice-presidents.
"We want to make our leadership through a fair election, otherwise the leader would not be responsible and liable to its members," said Zahangir Alam, convener of Swadhinata Parishad.
"We didn't discuss yet over the panel leader for next election as election time is yet far away", Anowarul Alam Chowdhury Parvez, a former president of BGMEA from Forum.
"We will discuss on election issue in next meeting of BGMEA former presidents' forum," he added.
