Garment workers stage demo for arrears in Chattogram
The workers have not been paid for last four months despite repeated promises by the owner
Workers of a garment factory in Chattogram demonstrated demanding payment of their arrears on Tuesday. The protest resulted road block in port city's Kulgaon Battol area for half an hour.
Witnesses said some workers of the factory owned by Saad Musa group started protesting in front of its main gate around 1pm. However, workers left the road when police gave assurance of payment of their arrears followed by discussion with the factory officials.
Police said the workers have not been paid for last four months despite repeated promises by the owner.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bayezid Bostami Police Station Priton Sarkar told The Business Standard, "Workers of Saad Musa group's garment factory have been protesting for two days demanding arrears. Later, we have discussed the matter with the factory officials and convinced the protesters to leave the road".
"One month's wages will be paid in the next week while remaining the arrears to be paid gradually," the OC added quoting the factory officials.
However, none of the Saad Musa group is available to make any comment over the issue despite several attempts.
Earlier on March 21, 2018 workers of the same factory protested demanding arrears.
