Workers of a ready-made garment factory in Chattogram staged demonstration today demanding full wages for the month of April.

The workers of Four H Lingerie Ltd also took position on the Chattogram-Hatahazari road for four hours.

Chattogram Industrial Police Inspector Md Jahid said the workers demonstrated demanding 100 per cent wages for April.  "We convinced them to withdraw their demonstration and then they left the road," said Jahid.

The police were communicating with the factory owner in this regard, he added.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Labour and Employment said only those who were at work for the entire month of April would get full salary.

Workers, who worked partly, would get full salary for the working days and 65 per cent for the rest of the days, the ministry said.

However, 60 per cent of their salary will be paid before Eid while the remaining 5 per cent will be adjusted with the salary for May.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said in a statement on Saturday (May 9) that apparel workers, who did not work in April, would get 60 per cent of their gross salary and another 5 per cent would be adjusted with the salary for May.

Meanwhile, workers, who had rejoined the work, would receive 100 per cent payment for the days they worked, the BGMEA stated.
