Stern action would be taken if any official harass taxpayers, said Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Monday.
"If anyone complains, we will take actions immediately," said the minister at a prorgramme to honour top VAT payers on National VAT Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.
The finance minister said, "The government collects VAT and other taxes and spends that for underprivileged persons. The revenue is used for the country's development."
VAT is not a burden as it was determined rationally, said the minister.
Kamal also said VAT exemption was one of the reasons for low tax to GDP ratio.
"If we do not exempt VAT and taxes, the ratio will increase substantially," he said, adding that the government provide the exemptions only for benefits of the businesses and keep the prices of essentials commodities at affordable levels.
The Minister urged businessmen to pay VAT properly.
The National Board of Revenue awarded a total of 144 business firms in different categories for paying highest amount of VAT in 2017-18 fiscal year.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal handed over crests and certificates to the representatives of the taxpaying firms.
The revenue board members Sultan Md Iqbal, Abdul Mannan Shikder, Khandaker Muhammad Aminur Rahman and VAT officials were also present in the event.
Of the 144 entities, nine businesses got the VAT awards at national level and 135 businesses at district level.
Square Formulations Ltd, Aristopharma Ltd and Rashidpur Condensate Fractionation Plant got the awards at the national level in production category, while Hamco Corporation Ltd, SC Johnson Pvt Ltd and Siemens Health Care Ltd won awards in trade category and Chittagong Warehouse Ltd, Qatar Airways and Thai Airways in service category.
Two to three business entities were awarded at district level in production, service and trade categories.
Berger paints, Sincon Enterprise, Fiber at Home from Dhaka, while SMC Enterprise, Gopal Pal Mondar Dokan from Mymensingh, Banaful and Co, Brac Aarong, Chowdhury Tea Warehouses from Chittagong, Nitol Niloy Filter Industries, Walton Plaza, Nanking Chinese Restaurant from Rajshahi, Sheltech Technology, Transcom Foods from Sylhet, Olympic Cement Industries, Asian Paints, Green Line Waterways from Barishal, Safe and Save, Khorshed Metal, City Industries from Khulna, Walton Plaza, RDRS Guest House from Rangpur won the award at district level.
Besides, Popular Pharmaceuticals, Akij Biri Factories, Olympic Industries, RFL electronics, Nippon Paints, Ispahani Tea, Haque Chemicals, znd Sundarban Couriers were among the companies which were awarded at district levels in the three categories.
