The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has asked banks to freeze the bank accounts of Dhaka South City Corporation Councillor AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed.

The Central Intelligence Cell of the revenue board sent letters to banks in this regard on Thursday, and also asked the authorities concerned to freeze bank accounts of Sayeed's wife Farhana Ahmed.

There are allegations that Sayeed was involved in extortion and in tender manipulation as well as in the gambling business.

The NBR is freezing his account as part of the government's ongoing drive against corruption, said revenue board officials.

Meanwhile, the Central Intelligence Unit of the revenue board has asked banks to provide account information of five former government engineers. It also asked for account information on the wives of four of the five engineers.

They are: Hafizur Rahman Munshi, former chief engineer of the Public Works Department and of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, and his wife Marufa Rahman Kanta; SAM Fazlul Kabir, former engineer of the housing and public works ministry, and his wife Kashpia Shirin; Momitur Rahman, another former engineer of the same ministry; engineer Rafiqul Islam and his wife Rasheda Islam; engineer Abdul Hai and his wife Banani Sultana.

The NBR has also asked banks to provide information on all bank accounts of leather goods company TML Bangladesh Ltd.

Moreover, Western Engineering, an organisation that is involved in the tender process of various projects under the public works ministry, has been asked to provide its bank information.

NBR also asked banks to provide account information of Rohingya leader Dil Mohammad and his wife Nasrin Akhter.
