The authorities of Chattogram Customs House seized a fake consignment on Thursday afternoon where cosmetics items were being imported in the name of power tiller plough.

Saleha Trading, a Dhaka-based importer, has been accused of this fraudulent importing.

Customs officials said the company imported 50 tonnes of shampoos, creams and other cosmetic products of some renowned brands.

Thus, the importer tried to evade Tk2.5 crore as duties, they claimed.

Rejaul Karim, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Customs House, said the Old Dhaka-based Saleha Trading was scheduled to import 30 tonnes of plough of power tiller from Singapore.

"Three containers of this importing firm reached the port on 11 January last, but they did not take any step to discharge their goods. Acting on a tip-off, the audit investigation and research wing of the customs house opened the containers in presence of relevant agencies, and found various cosmetics items instead of ploughs," he said.

"We are taking preparations for filing a case in this regard. The anti-money laundering unit of the customs house will investigate whether the importer laundered money through the process," he added.
