Inflation eases to 5.36 percent in July
The point-to-point inflation rate in July decreased by 0.28 percentage points to 5.36% from 5.64% of June, said the Planning Minister MA Mannan.
The minister made the disclosure at a press conference after the ECNEC meeting today.
In July of the previous year, the inflation rate was 5.53% and inflation was 5.64% on a point-to-point basis last June.
"This means that for the product or service that was supposed to cost Tk100 in July 2020, you have to spend Tk105.36 for that product or service in July this year," he said.
He told reporters at a press conference after the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday, citing the latest report prepared by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Inflation in the food sub-sector rose to 5.08% in May from 5.70% in July last year, the minister said.
However, non-food sub-sector inflation has risen slightly to 5.80% in July from 5.28% in July last year.
He attributed the decline in inflation to a slight drop in food prices.
According to the BBS report, prices of eggs, broiler chickens, vegetables such as eggplant, pumpkin, sweet pumpkin, raw papaya, potato, cucumber, carrot, lemon, etc. have come down in July.
