Unveiling of Memorial Plaque for Martyr Md. Asif Hasan at Northern University Bangladesh
In a moving tribute to Martyr Mohammad Asif Hasan, a distinguished student of the English Department at Northern University Bangladesh (NUB), who lost his life during the anti-discrimination student movement, the university has renamed its campus "Asif Square" to honor his legacy. The memorial plaque for "Asif Square" was unveiled on 10 September 2024 at 2:00 PM in a ceremony marked by prayers and a commemorative discussion.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Asif's family members—his father Mr. Mahmud Alam, mother, brother, and aunt—alongside Mr. Mohammad Nahid Islam, Honorable Adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Information and Broadcasting. Other notable attendees included Prof. Dr. Abu Yousuf Md Abdullah, Chairman of the Northern University Bangladesh Trust, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, members of the Trustee Board, faculty, and students. Leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, including Nusrat Tbassum and Asad bin Roni, were also present.
In his speech, Adviser Mohammad Nahid Islam reflected on the profound significance of martyrdom, stating that realizing the dreams of martyrs like Asif requires urgent reform in Bangladesh. He praised Northern University's efforts to memorialize Asif, seeing it as a meaningful way to keep the spirit of the movement alive.
Mr. Mahmud Alam, Asif's father, expressed deep gratitude to the university for honoring his son and remarked that the sacrifices of martyrs like Asif will inspire others to work towards building a just and equitable Bangladesh.
Prof. Dr. Abu Yousuf Md Abdullah acknowledged the role of private university students in leading the anti-discrimination movement, noting Asif's ultimate sacrifice. He assured that NUB would continue to support the injured students, covering their medical expenses.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the eternal peace of Martyr Mohammad Asif Hasan's soul.
