Chevron Bangladesh inaugurates tree plantation campaign to promote environmental sustainability
Chevron Bangladesh, in collaboration with the environmental organization Green Savers, has launched a tree plantation program near its Bibiyana Gas Plant in Habiganj as part of a nationwide initiative to protect biodiversity.
The five-year project aims to plant over 4,000 high-quality seedlings, including indigenous flowers, fruit trees, wood trees, and medicinal plants. The initiative prioritizes native species to promote biodiversity, improve air quality, and provide habitat for local wildlife. A significant aspect of the project is the planting of Debdaru trees, known for their sound-absorbing qualities, which will help reduce noise pollution and create a more peaceful environment around the gas plant.
This program reflects Chevron's commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being. Green Savers will manage the planting and maintenance of the trees to ensure their long-term growth and health.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Fardoush Anwar, director of the Sylhet divisional office of the Department of Environment, praised the initiative, describing it as a noteworthy example of corporate responsibility towards environmental protection.
Chevron Bangladesh's president and managing director, Mr. Eric M. Walker, highlighted the environmental benefits of the initiative, stating, "Tree plantation offsets carbon emissions and commits to a greener, healthier future. Our tree plantation campaign reflects our dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being. We aim to nurture these trees for lasting benefits to the environment and community."
Ahsan Rony, founder of Green Savers, emphasized the importance of corporate involvement in environmental initiatives, stating, "If top corporate houses like Chevron take such planned and sustainable initiatives to build a green Bangladesh and protect the environment, the country will be greener."
The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Md. Nur E Alam Siddiquee, Deputy Director of Habiganj District Agricultural Extension Department; Mr. Anupam Das Anup, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Nabiganj Upazila; Mr. Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Nabiganj Upazila; Mr. Mohammad Kamal Hossain PPM, Officer in Charge of Nabiganj Police Station; Muhammad Imrul Kabir, Corporate Affairs Director at Chevron Bangladesh, and other local officials and environmentalists.
