A single day record 132 people, including union parishad chairman, policemen and journalists, were diagnosed with novel coronavirus infection in Chattogram on May 19.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Civil surgeon Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi said, "This is the first time that the number of infection has crossed 100 in a 24-hour period of time."

Among the newly detected patients, seven infected police are from different units of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

One of the infected journalists is a cameraperson of a private TV channel and another works for a national daily newspaper.

According to the civil surgeon office, a total of 262 samples were tested at the lab of Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID) in Chattogram, 70 at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU) and 195 at Chattogram Medical College Hospital lab, where respectively 58, 20 and 75 tested coronavirus positive.

As of now, some 977 tested positive for Covid-19 in Chattogram. Of whom, 120 left hospital after recovery and 41 died.
